The 70’s was a time recently emerging from the Women’s Rights Movement. Inequality in the workplace was a major issue, as women were not paid as much as men. This movement impacted fashion of the 70’s, as well, since many makeup industries wanted to add to the image of the empowered woman.
Understanding the 70’s
This was an era of diversity when it comes to makeup. First off, there was the notion that feminists did not want to be just a sex object, but still wanted to continue wearing makeup. So, thus came out the “natural” makeup look. I would definitely consider Farrah Fawcett as a great person to look at when achieving this look.
There was also a revival of the 20’s (following The Great Gatbsy) during the first half of the decade. The 40’s red lip was also making a huge come back.
Punk took a huge step in. Like the feminists, people within the punk subculture wanted to go against society’s standards. Everything about their makeup and clothes was done purposely to shock everyone else. Piercings, tattoos, and crazy hair finished off the look.
Disco is probably what tends to pop into your head when your think of the 70’s. Eyeshadow was glittery and typically paired with a bold lip. It was meant to be seen.
GET THE LOOK:
The 1970’s Feminist
Do your face’s base as you normally would. Bronzed skin was huge during this era, so use a bronzer liberally around the areas light typically hits your face. Lightly apply blush to the apples of your cheeks. Brush in some brow powder for a very natural, yet more filled in brow. Finish your eyes with a coat or two of mascara. For lipstick, opt for a nude or light pink.
Nostalgia
Here you can apply elements of the 70’s , 40’s and 20’s into one look. This will entail a 20’s-style smokey eye with 70’s disco colors (green, blue, purple). This means the smoke goes pretty much all over the eye (up to the brow). Then you can pair it with a thinner brow you’d normally do and the classic red lip associated with the 40’s. Warning: This look is not for the faint-hearted.
Punk
Instead of the Amy Winehouse-esque wing associated with 70’s Punk, you can opt for more of a black all-over kind of look. Then stick with a dark vampy lip in order to keep the look dark and contrasted to the rest of your face. If you want to keep this from looking too modern gothic, you could use black liner to do some graphics near your eyes. You could also sweep some blush on your cheeks. I literally mean sweep; do not blend out, as 70’s punk-ers did not do soft edges.
Disco
This is easier than is looks: take any bright color and blend it all over your lid, going into the crease if you want. You can add a darker color in your crease to giver definition, but this is not necessary. The lips would look best with a gloss or coral lipstick, in my opinion.
