1990s Makeup

Today I was in a rush to go to a birthday party with 40 minutes notice. I still had to shower, get dressed, and do my hair and makeup.  Normally I would have done a nice cat eye and big lashes but there was no time. I decided to opt for a vamp lip and natural eyes. I quickly realized how much I looked like the 90s Drew Barrymore (minus the thin brows). The second thing I noticed was how much I dig this effortless look. So why not share it with you guys?

Understanding 90’s Makeup

If you are specifically going after the 90’s look and not the one I have done, the first thing you need to do is understand the style in this era.

Besides grunge, with its circularly-smoked-out eyes and vamp lips, there was also a very natural and more supermodel-esque look. This typical look was often sported by anyone who wasn’t a fan of the dramatic-ness of grunge. As seen in the picture of Drew Barrymore, this look often included mauve, deep red, or brown lips, naked/almost naked eyes, thin (or thick, depending on your preference) eyebrow, and a light bronzer/blush (contouring was not as huge as it is now). I’ll leave some more examples below.

You will need (what I used):

  • foundation
  • concealer
  • powder
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade (I used ash brown)
  • Brow tint/gel
  • mascara
  • Any berry, vampy, or brown lipstick
  • *optional: blush/bronzer/contour color

Get the Look

Step 1: Conceal any imperfections using your favorite concealer. I used Revlon’s ColorStay Concealer in fair. Then I blended it into my skin using a beauty blender.

Step 2: Apply your foundation as you normally would, but include your eyelid this time. I use Ulta’s Double Duty Foundation in Classic Ivory. Then powder your face (and eyelids) with whatever powder you use, mine being Tarte’s Amazon Clay Powder.

Step 3: If you chose to apply blush, LIGHTLY apply on the apples of your cheeks for a very natural flush. If you’d like to contour with bronzer, it should be matte. I simply used an eyeshadow from the Naked Basics Palette.

Step 4: Do your eyebrows as you normally would. I show you how to do eyebrows here.** If you are going for a thinner brow and don’t want to pluck, I suggest blocking out your eyebrows (if they are thick and dark) with a non toxic glue stick (I promise, it’s safe) and applying concealer and lots of powder over top. Then use an eye pencil or whatever you’d like to draw them on thin.

Step 5: If you want to bring some dimension to the eyes, use a matte taupe or brown shade and lightly blend into the cease and lower lash line. Curl your lashes and apply one coat of mascara.

Step 6: Apply whatever lipstick you have chosen. I lined my lips with Nyx’s lip pencil in Expresso and applied their matte lip creme in Transylvania over top. Clean up the edges with concealer.

Then you are officially a 90s girl!

Here are some more picture of the final product. I think I may do a series of decade-inspired makeup. Let me know in the comments if this does or does not sound appealing to you.
